From then Till Now...How it All Began

Nick Proach has been building models since he was 11 years old, graduating to space modeling at the time of the Apollo 11 lunar landing in 1969. What started as an all-consuming hobby in the late 1960's for a gangly 14 year-old fascinated with the space program (he turned out his first professional spacecraft model at the age of 17) has grown to become a full-time business undertaken with passion by a man still in love with space flight.

In 1975 (Nick) built a model, which was used by CTV, for their coverage of the historic Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, which saw the first International meeting in space between Russia and the United States.

In 1985, Nick did what no other modelmaker was able to do - he created a 1/5 scale working model of Canada's Anik C communications satellite for Telesat Canada. The model was designed to simulate it's deployment sequence. The model, based on the Hughes 376 design, spun and fully deployed itself, a sequence which was completed on budget, a feat other model makers had tried over a period of years but could not produce. It was Nick's intimate knowledge of the satellite and its functions that lead to this success.

In 1986, Nick created two large models purchased by the Canadian Government to use in the Canada Pavilion at Expo 86, the world's fair held that year in Vancouver, British Columbia. One model was the early US Space Station "Freedom", and measured over 15 feet long. The other was a 1/4 scale model of Canada's proposed MSAT (mobile satellite), which measured over 28 feet across it's solar wings! (See Our Gallery) This is the largest model built to date by Nick Proach.

In 1994, Nick put his knowledge of space flight and space hardware with his expertise of modelmaking together to form Nick Proach Models. His company is dedicated to keeping the memory of the glory days of space flight alive by creating the most detailed, most sought after museum and desktop model replicas of those early spacecraft and rockets, most of which are American subjects.

For the last 45 years, Nick Proach has intimately followed the US, Russian and Canadian Space programs, and in coupling this with his expertise in professional model making, is able to produce a model of any aerospace subject. It does not matter whether it has flown or is currently under development - Nick Proach Models will tackle any model display project.

Nick has numerous contacts in NASA and the aerospace community at large, along with an extensive print and video library that is in a constant state of expansion. Nick is also well known as a "Space Historian", and has a vast knowledge and library of records from all manned and unmanned spaceflights. He also takes time to keep up with developments in the aerospace field and is a regular contributor in space-related magazines and periodicals.

Nick is a big promoter of aerospace education, and will address groups of any size to discuss developments in the various Space Programs from countries around the world as well as his experiences with many of the projects he has done.

With all this knowledge and ability in aerospace technology and aerospace model making, Nick Proach Models is the best source for models of spacecraft, rockets, probes, aircraft, missiles, and mockups for museums, displays and presentations.

Nick Proach Models can meet any model-making needs, from conceptual designs right through to the finished, museum quality replica model implementation - contact us today to see how we can assist you with your project.
